There are a number of quality restaurants and eateries within walking distance from Stowaway. The Gallivant is one of the few restaurants to have been awarded two AA rosettes in the South East of England, The Owl, Rye Bay Café and The Dunes Bar all hold certificates of excellence with Trip Advisor and are within a five-minute stroll of the cottage. Beryl’s Café serves the most amazing home cooked breakfasts and meals throughout the day and it’s neighboring farm shop ‘Salts’ sells a wide selection of good quality locally sourced products and hand-made frozen meals from the ‘Cook’ range.

The cottage and surrounding area offer something for everyone at any time of year. Perfect for spring, summer, autumn and winter breaks, it’s situation is in close proximity to many tourist attractions and towns:

The medieval town of Rye is just 3 miles away, set on a hill, steeped in history with its labyrinth of cobbled streets, narrow alleyways and architecture, the town feels like it has been suspended in time. Rye is a real treat for food lovers with its many trendy bistros, pubs and tea shops. The harbor with its local fishing fleet, awe inspiring churches, buildings, castle and heritage centre, fascinating book shops, art galleries, old English sweet shop, boutiques, crafts and antiques venues; there really is something for everyone.

The seaside town of Hastings is 16 miles to the west of Camber. It is known for the 1066 Battle of Hastings, fought on a nearby field where Battle Abbey now stands. The Norman ruins of Hastings Castle, once home to William the Conqueror, overlook the English Channel. With smugglers caves to explore, museums and art galleries to visit, an old town and country park, Hastings is a must see for visitors to the region.

The small, ancient town of Winchelsea is a hidden gem 2 miles to the west of Rye. Once a major hub for the medieval wine trade, with hidden wine cellars of the old port time beneath the broad streets; this seaside town is unspoilt with a pub, tea shop, church of St Thomas the Martyr, three medieval gates and a fascinating museum (which is open daily during the summer). Winchelsea Beach is an undeveloped, peaceful area with shingle at high tide and sand at low tide, ideal for walking and shrimping. Swimming is safe and Winchelsea has regularly received a Clean Beach Award.

We would recommend a 4-mile walk following the sea wall eastwards, stopping at the Bird Reserve, following the River Rother towards Rye and returning across the tracks past Camber Castle.

Situation: Camber Sands is situated on the south coast in East Sussex, to the west of Dover and Folkestone and 3 miles to the east of Rye.

Rail services: Branch line train services run from Rye to Ashford International station with connections for London and the continent. A high speed link runs from Ashford to London St Pancras in 37 minutes. Rye station is approximately 3 miles from the property and there is a taxi rank outside.

By road: The M20 can be joined at Ashford with links to London, the coast and other motorway networks. The A21 at Flimwell links to the M25 at junction 5, Gatwick and Heathrow airports.
